Excellent educators know how important it is for children to enjoy learning and be active from a young age. Learning the fundamental moment skills as early as possible is also essential #earlyyearseducation #physicaldevelopment #physicaleducation #fundamentalmovementskills

So, what are Fundamental Movement Skills?

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are a specific set of skills that involve different body parts such as feet, legs, trunk, head, arms and hands. These skills are the building blocks for more complex and specialised skills that kids will need throughout their lives to competently participate in different games, sports and recreational activities.

When children learn FMS properly like running, jumping and kicking, it will enable school readiness and encourage a lifelong passion for physical activity

As children learn each skill it’s important to break them down into fun games and opportunities for free play so they can learn and master them.

Not all children will have mastered all of the FMS skills by the time they finish nursery / preschool and that’s ok, however it is important that children are taught each of the skills so they have the opportunity to master components of the skill if not the whole skill.

All our Sportyminis coaches are experts in the field of FMS and early years physical education, delivering high quality FMS sessions linked to the EYFS curriculum.

Here are our Sportyminis top tips:

Pick 1 locomotive, 1 non locomotive and 1 manipulative skill per session to focus on,
Use plenty of positive encouragement for children ensuring there is plenty of opportunity for discovery / free play
Make sure the play areas are safe and there are instruction commands. Our favourites are ‘ready, steady, go’ and ‘freeze like a statute’
Children should be encouraged to drink plenty of water before during and after the sessions (even when it’s cold)
Above all have fun with the children. You are truly making a difference to their education experience and lives
We use the FMS table in the image to assess how our Sportyminis are developing.
